A New Life | South West Student Story

"I feel like I am growing more into the woman that God created me to be."

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am in my second year of study as an independent student in the South West. Alongside studying, I currently work with people who have complex needs and I am a single mum to an amazing 12-year-old! I have lived a life of seeking meaning and truth in a wide range of places, including a myriad of spiritual practices, drink and drugs and broken relationships. Eventually I ended up in the arms of Jesus and a new life began to unfold both inside and outside of me. And I had questions, so many questions about the Bible, about faith, about Jesus, about EVERYTHING! I was very blessed to be surrounded by people in leadership who were willing and able to help me navigate the themes and practices. As a new Christian these connections were so invaluable! I then rightly or wrongly sensed a nudge from God over a period of time to undertake my own deeper learning. I do not know where this course will lead me in this moment, but I hope to somehow incorporate my learning into working with our homeless neighbours in some way. God has a plan and more will be revealed!

What drew you to study at St Mellitus College?

I was drawn to St Mellitus College because the teaching is weekly, and the face-to-face portion is on a weekday when my child is at school. I really wanted to be part of a community that grows and learns together. That need for me is met at St Mellitus where we meet weekly on a Tuesday during term time. The day is wrapped in prayer and worship which sets the scene beautifully for what happens there during the day. St Mellitus has two residential learning weeks for independent students, and I could manage this commitment alongside my work and parenting obligations. It ticked all the boxes!

How would you describe the culture at St Mellitus College?

I have never experienced anything like it. I don't just feel like a student when I am there. I feel like a valued member of the family. Everyone is so supportive of each other and the teaching team are always keen to engage in theological debate over coffee at break times and help in any way they can! I have been out of the academic world for 30 years and I have had amazing support from the academic skills team to help oil the rusty cogs in my brain.  In a nutshell, I would describe it as supportive, encouraging and rooted in Jesus.

Why did you choose your programme of study?

I wanted to have enough time to get really stuck into studying Theology, so I chose the BA because I would be studying for 3 years. I already have an undergraduate degree, so I had to find the funds myself and so far, God has provided!

What difference have your studies at St Mellitus College made in your life and faith?

There has been a deeply formational element to studying at St Mellitus College, particularly during the afternoon sessions where thought and heart provoking topics like humility, integrity, empathy and preaching, (to name just a few) are explored. It has been so enriching and so much more than learning for learning’s sake. I feel like I am growing more into the woman that God created me to be. Throughout the course while engaging in the reading, lectures and assignments and conversations, I have felt God revealing more and more of Himself. It has been mind-blowing!

What tips or advice would you give to prospective students?

Book a place on an open day. You will not regret it!! If there are barriers, do not let that stop you. There are so many reasons why I thought I couldn't manage this course. Lack of finances, time constraints, too old, lacking in tech, academic, and study skills. I could go on. God’s grace and equipping is an amazing gift!

In three words, describe St Mellitus College.

Transformative, strengthening, heart and mind opening
